We needed waterproof overtrousers this morning and very few of us had them. I’m not surprised. The recent beautiful weather has lulled us into a false sense of security.
The key with overtrousers is that they are light and breathable. You do not want to end up with sweaty legs or spoil your walk with overtrousers that are heavy and rigid. Here are my three choices:
- Berghaus Gore-tex Paclite Waterproof Trousers. These are my current overtrousers. They’re waterproof, light, highly breathable, with an elasticated waistband and 3/4 length water resistant side zips. They are very easy to pack away if you don’t need them (they come with their own mesh net) and I find them easy to put on and take off. They retail at around £100 and you can get them from Go Outdoors or Amazon.
- Rab Womens Kinetic Pants. These are super-light waterproof overtrousers, using Pertex Shield (a waterproof membrane like Gore-tex). They have articulated knees and 3/4 length water resistant side zips. I really like them, especially during the summer months as they weigh only 180g so you barely feel you have them on! They retail at £90 but you can currently buy them from Cotswold Outdoor for £55.
- Sprayway Womens Arista Pro Shell Pants. Another Gore-tex overtrouser. Light and breathable with a 3/4 length side zip and articulated knees. They also have their own mesh net. The retail price is £100 but The Climbers Shop is selling them for £79 at the moment.
